We know what subtitles are, and we love to watch videos with subtitles (most of us, some people find this irritating). If you are watching the “Bleach” anime series, you will see an example of a hard subbed video.

A hard subtitle is a subtitle that is combined with the video itself. To remove the subtitle, you need to do video editing. Since it is with the video, It is also included in the animation. Therefore, It seems impossible for an ordinary user to separate a hard subtitle from a video. The subtitle stream is one with the video frames and text will not be editable.

What if you want to add a subtitle for your favorite series? Let’s take Heroes as an example.

Soft subtitles comes in handy. A soft subtitle is a separate subtitle file that can be incorporated with any video. A subtitle file has these extensions: sub, srt. To use the subtitle file, simply change its name to that of your video leaving its extension unchanged.

ex.

MyVideoFile.avi
MyVideoFile.sub

Where could you get subtitles? You could get some subtitles from google, but it is best to search subscene.com. These subtitles could be edited using the subtitle studio. You could change wrong spellings and other character case issue.

NOTE: your video and subtitle file should be placed in 1 directory.

The download day was scheduled June 17, 2008. We are in the Philippines so we are 1 day ahead, and now they finally launched 3.0 . Today, Firefox will set a world record of the most downloaded software within 24 hours. I’ve been waiting for this yesterday. Anyway, the Final Release has a whole lot of new features.

This is a list of the top features obtained from their website:

1. One-Click Bookmarking
2. Improved Performance
3. Full Zoom
4. Instant Website ID
5. Smart Location Bar
6. Password Manager
7. Platform-Native Look & Feel

The complete list is located here. One feature that I’ve been waiting for since 2.0, is the full-zoom feature. IE7 already has this feature. What is the full-zoom feature? If you are not familiar how to zoom a webpage, you could do this by holding down ctrl key on your keyboard while scrolling up your mouse. Unfortunately on Firefox 2.0, the text alone will become larger not including the images. This will result in distortion of the whole web page layout. But because of the full-zoom feature, images alongisde with text zoom at the same time. Obviously, this method of zooming will give you a horizontal scrollbar.

I hope Firefox will not become a bloatware in time. Download Firefox 3.0 now!

NOTE: some plugins still don’t work for Firefox 3.0.You gotta wait for your favorite plugin that you can’t live without to update.

I downloaded XNeat last week. I’ve been using this software for almost 3 days now. Xneat adds some features to your taskbar and your windows. Menus will be added to your windows to change its opacity, send it to the system tray, add some effects, let is stay on top. The taskbar buttons that contains the windows titles could be arranged or so to speak change its order. You could drag each taskbar button and move it around. You could also change the taskbar appearance by hiding and showing different components like the system clock.

This is not an accusation but rather an eye-opener to this said professor. Taking someones work and claiming that it is yours is against the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo recently signed Republic Act No. 9239 known as the “Optical Media Act of 2003.” This law was enacted in accord with the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines to ensure the protection and promotion of intellectual property rights. This act seeks to regulate optical media by imposing stern regulations in the licensing, copying and distribution of optical media such as DVD’s, CD’s, VCD’s, DVD-ROMS, CD ROMS, CD recordables and rewritables. - Ailyn L. Cortez

Hence, nothing is exempted, either you copy something from an individual or a company. I guess, I don’t need to mention the name of the professor since I respect a professor and a coder like Him. Anyway, he is our professor in WEBPROG (Web Programming). This is a screenshot of our professor’s Learning PHP presentation with his name omitted.

It is a good idea to use someone’s presentation and use it on class. Why make your own when you could settle for a pre-made presentation? But, why bother change the authors name and claim it as your own. Are you a coder that wants something to be taken away from you in a matter of seconds? Deleting the author’s name and replacing it with your 12 character name? This is something you won’t do and use on a university to teach your students!

There are 3 different ways to straighten a slanted image. These images often times come from scanner beds and some from digital cameras. What does a a slanted image look like and what would the output look like. Let’s take a look at the example picture below.

The tutorial will be a video so be ready with your picture and fireup your Photoshop CS3. You could could use CS2 but you could only use 2 methods. The same goes for CS but only 1 method is available I suppose.

How can a dark webpages save engergy? According to energy saving organizations a webpage that has one color displayed on your monitor could save colors. I stumbled into a website that actually promotes energy saving by proposing a Black Google. This website is called Blackle and is powered by a custom Google Search form. This is a screenshot of the webpage.

Why transform the clean white Google into a black one. According to Blackle:

a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages.

According to InternetWorldStats, there are 1,407,724,920
people using the internet. And referring to Google’s statistics on Alexa, Google reaches about 30% people and average page views per person approx 6.

Then based on the mathematical equation 1,407,724,920 x .30 , there are about 422 million users of Google. And assuming that each person visit 6 pages each and stay on each page for 2-3 seconds. So we have 422 x 6 x 3 = 7596 million or 7.5 billion pages per second on Google. So you have 250 x 5 x 5 = 6250 million page seconds on Google. A standard size monitor could take up to 80 watt hours according to Michael Blue Jay and converting it to watt seconds we have 10 to 15 watts per second in approximation. That means 62500 million Kilo Watt Second saved. That means 62,500,000/3600 = 17,361 Kilo Watt Hour electricity saved.
That’s a real saver. The original idea was proposed in this Blog.

Wikia, if you are not aware offers a free wiki for people i suppose. A wiki is an online information storage or more of a library to share with others. However, Wikia search introduces us a new way of searching. Wikia offers us a “user powered” search I could say. Here is a sneak peek of the site:

What does Wikia offer that Google and Yahoo doesn’t? The two latter companies use bots or spiders to crawl the internet and gather data from webpages. This method allows websites to be included to their search engines and be known to the World Wide Web. How about doing this with human intervention?

Wikia
lets you add your own website to their directory on the fly. You could add comments and even rate other sites. You could also start a vote for deletion of a specific site. There are a lot of things you could add: Annotations, Spotlight, Suggestions.

Wikia is a user driven search engine for users. It is a large website directory, where its contents are made by users. It adopts the Wikipedia style, but now a search engine that indexes websites.

If you have not visited it yet, what are you waiting for? Add your website and start flagging those unnecessary webpages.

I will be introducing an application called a memory scanner that is used to cheat games on the fly. A memory scanner searches for a memory value and manipulates its contents while the game is running. This is an old application made by Corsica productions. You could obtain the application by clicking this link available at Tim’s Vault website.

Requirements:
1. A Ripway account. Please register now if you don’t have one.
2. A Friendster account. I bet you have one.

Now, take a look at this image. This is my Friendster account. On the right side, you’ll see Google’s Ads.

I really love this video. It’s been days since I saw this video and is now sitting on my bookmarks toolbar. This a superhero filled video, Marvel’s Iron Man, Spiderman, and The Hulk all in one video. This video could be a full length movie. It’s creators are absolutely professional animators to produce such CGI models perfectly. I want to learn 3D modeling!
